Funso Babarinde, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Osun State, has expressed concerns over the economic hardships facing Nigerians, urging President Bola Tinubu and his economic team to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity, food shortages, and agricultural productivity. Speaking on the live radio programme Frank Talk on Rave FM in Osogbo, Babarinde noted that despite official statistics, many Nigerians are still struggling and “not smiling.”
Babarinde highlighted the adverse impact of the removal of the fuel subsidy, which he said continues to affect Nigerians deeply, adding that although the Tinubu administration has launched commendable initiatives like NELFUND for higher education students, challenges remain. He pointed out the lack of guaranteed employment for student loan beneficiaries and called for improved national security intelligence.
He also criticized the government’s approach to borrowing and the perceived lack of accountability in prosecuting corruption, particularly within the ruling party. According to Babarinde, “There is a lack of consequences for wrongdoing, encouraging more people to do wrong.”
In response, Jamiu Olawumi, former Special Adviser on Education to ex-Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, praised President Tinubu’s two years in office, highlighting his efforts to improve security and the economy. Olawumi described the economic reforms as bold and necessary, emphasizing that change often requires difficult decisions and that Nigerians should unite to support the ongoing national reconstruction.
He stated, “Nigeria has a very wrong attitude to self-development and patriotism,” and urged citizens to recognize the progress made under the Tinubu administration while working collectively toward a better future.
