Orji Kalu Defends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Says “Nigerians Are Used to Easy Money”

In a bold statement that has stirred public discourse, former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has voiced his strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms. Kalu stated that many Nigerians have grown accustomed to what he described as “easy money,” and argued that the President’s policy decisions, though tough, are necessary for the country’s long-term financial stability.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Senator Kalu emphasized that Tinubu inherited a struggling economy from previous administrations and is taking the right steps to correct systemic imbalances. He urged Nigerians to exercise patience and understand that real economic transformation requires time, discipline, and a shift in mindset.

> “We must be honest with ourselves — Nigerians have gotten too used to easy money. The President is doing his best to stabilize the economy. These policies are not aimed at punishing the people but saving the nation from collapse,” Kalu asserted.

He further highlighted the importance of self-reliance and productivity over dependence on government handouts or fuel subsidies, which he said had drained national resources for decades. According to him, Tinubu’s removal of the fuel subsidy and unification of the exchange rate are among the tough but necessary decisions meant to restore economic confidence and attract foreign investments.

Kalu dismissed critics who have accused the Tinubu administration of lacking empathy, stating that tough decisions are sometimes misinterpreted, especially when short-term pain overshadows long-term benefits.

> “Change is never easy, especially when it involves restructuring economic policies that have enabled a culture of dependency. We must think beyond today and support policies that will benefit future generations,” he added.

The lawmaker also called on opposition parties and civil society groups to refrain from politicizing economic matters, stressing that rebuilding Nigeria’s economy should be a collective effort.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has faced mounting criticism from citizens struggling with the rising cost of living, inflation, and job losses. However, the government maintains that its reform agenda is essential for achieving macroeconomic stability and sustainable growth.

As the reforms continue to take root, political analysts say that public support will depend largely on how quickly the policies translate into visible improvements in people’s daily lives. Still, voices like Orji Kalu’s signal that the administration retains significant backing from influential political figures.

Kalu’s remarks are expected to further ignite the debate over Nigeria’s economic trajectory and the sacrifices needed to achieve a more resilient and productive economy.
