Ogun State Urges Residents to Shun Noise Pollution for a Healthier Environment in Nigeria

In a renewed effort to promote environmental sustainability and public health, the Ogun State Government has called on residents to desist from activities that contribute to noise pollution. This appeal comes as part of the government’s broader campaign to curb environmental infractions and ensure a healthier living space for all citizens within the state.

Speaking through the Permanent Secretary of the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, Mr. Rasak Ojetola, the government emphasized that excessive noise has detrimental effects not only on the environment but also on human health. He pointed out that continuous exposure to loud sounds can lead to hearing impairments, increased stress levels, and other serious health complications.

According to Ojetola, noise pollution—often overlooked as a minor infraction—is a significant environmental concern that the government is taking seriously. He noted that sources such as loudspeakers from religious houses, commercial centers, industrial machines, and even residential generators have contributed immensely to rising noise levels in both urban and suburban areas of the state.

He urged residents and business owners to adhere strictly to acceptable noise levels and encouraged them to embrace the use of soundproofing technologies where necessary. The state government, he said, has intensified monitoring efforts to ensure compliance, warning that individuals or organizations found violating the noise control regulations will face stiff penalties.

Ogun State has also initiated community-based awareness programs aimed at sensitizing residents about the harmful effects of noise pollution. Through town hall meetings, local media, and educational outreach, the government hopes to change the narrative and instill a culture of environmental responsibility.

Environmental experts have applauded this move, describing it as timely and necessary given the growing urbanization of cities like Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, and Sango-Ota. They believe that proactive steps such as this will help the state align with national and global environmental standards, especially in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on health and well-being.

The Ogun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to creating a clean, quiet, and livable environment for all. Residents are encouraged to report cases of excessive noise and collaborate with the relevant authorities in maintaining peace and environmental order.

With this development, Ogun State joins the growing list of proactive states in Nigeria that are addressing environmental health issues head-on. As the government continues to implement these policies, it calls on every stakeholder—including religious leaders, business owners, and community members—to contribute their quota toward a safer, noise-free society.
