OC Transpo is rolling out the most extensive bus service overhaul in Ottawa’s history on April 27, impacting over 100 routes with only 27 remaining unchanged. Dubbed the “New Ways to Bus” plan, the shift aims to better reflect city growth and prioritize high-demand areas. While some commuters welcome shorter rides, others face more transfers, longer trips, and service cuts, sparking concern among transit advocates and riders alike.
Advocacy group Ottawa Transit Riders voiced worries over reduced early and late service, while daily users like Nicholas Mrazek anticipate significantly longer commutes. Parents, including Josh Lovell, are concerned about their children’s new travel routines and safety. Some residents, however, report minimal disruption or even slight improvements to their journeys.
The changes align more routes with Ottawa’s train system, a move that may improve efficiency for some but complicate trips for others. OC Transpo has launched a communication campaign to help residents adapt, though some believe the outreach came too late, especially for students on 600-series routes.
As the launch date coincides with a federal election, OC Transpo is being urged to ensure smooth operations with responsive support and flexibility based on rider feedback.
