Obasa’s Impeachment: Sanwo-Olu Respects Legislative Independence, Says Akosile

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has distanced himself from the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, the governor emphasized his commitment to the principle of separation of powers and dismissed allegations of his involvement in the legislative decision.

Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015 and represented the Agege State Constituency I, was impeached on January 13 over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

A Strained Relationship

Reports suggest that Obasa’s relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu became strained after the Lagos Assembly rejected 17 out of 39 commissioner nominees proposed by the governor in October 2023. Despite public denials of any rift, both men attended a reconciliation meeting organized by the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the apex decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu Focused on Governance

Addressing the speculation, Akosile reiterated that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s focus remains on advancing Lagos State rather than engaging in political disputes.

“The governor is a democrat and a gentleman who doesn’t meddle in legislative affairs,” Akosile stated during an interview with TheCable. “He remains preoccupied with the development of the state and has no interest in unproductive political skirmishes. The House’s decision was purely a legislative matter.”

New Leadership Emerges

Following Obasa’s removal, the Lagos Assembly elected Mojisola Meranda, previously the Deputy Speaker, as its new Speaker.

Obasa’s impeachment marks a significant shift in Lagos State politics, highlighting the intricate dynamics between the executive and legislative arms of government.
