Nova Scotia Legislators Unanimously Vote to Exclude Tesla from EV Rebate Program

In a decisive move reflecting geopolitical tensions, Nova Scotia’s legislative assembly voted unanimously on March 21, 2025, to exclude new Tesla vehicles from the province’s Electrify Nova Scotia Rebate Program. This program, established in 2021, offered rebates ranging from $2,000 to $3,000 for eligible electric vehicle (EV) purchases.

Political Motivations Behind the Decision

The amendment to the Financial Measures Act was introduced by New Democrat MLA Susan LeBlanc, who cited Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s association with U.S. President Donald Trump as a primary concern. LeBlanc stated, “The owner of Tesla happens to have aligned himself with a man who is waging economic war on our country, and this is a small way to take a stand against that.”

This sentiment was echoed by other members of the legislative assembly, who expressed unease over Musk’s political affiliations and his role as head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency. The Progressive Conservative members proposed a sub-amendment to ensure that the exclusion applies not only to Tesla but also to any corporation associated with the company, which was also unanimously approved.

Broader Implications and National Context

Nova Scotia’s decision aligns with similar actions taken by other Canadian provinces. Just a day prior, Manitoba announced it would exclude both new and used Tesla vehicles, as well as Chinese-made EVs, from its rebate program. Additionally, British Columbia’s BC Hydro removed Tesla from its CleanBC rebate program, which offered incentives for EV chargers and Powerwall installations.

At the federal level, the New Democratic Party (NDP) has proposed imposing a 100% tariff on Tesla vehicles as long as the U.S.-Canada trade tensions persist. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh emphasized the importance of supporting Canadian auto workers and industries, stating, “If you’re buying, buy Canadian. Support Canadian auto workers. Support Canadian auto jobs.”

Impact on Tesla and Canadian EV Consumers

These policy shifts present challenges for Tesla’s market presence in Canada. The removal of provincial rebates and potential federal tariffs could make Tesla vehicles less financially attractive to Canadian consumers. Prospective EV buyers may now look towards other manufacturers whose vehicles remain eligible for incentives, potentially reshaping the EV market landscape in Canada.
