Nintendo Launches Switch 2 Amid Soaring Global Demand and Supply Shortage Concerns

Nintendo launched the highly anticipated Switch 2 on Thursday, sparking global demand for the next-generation gaming console, which is expected to face initial supply shortages. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games described demand levels as “sky-high.”

Following the success of the original 2017 Switch—bolstered by blockbuster titles like The Legend of Zelda series and Animal Crossing: New Horizons—the Switch 2 arrives with a larger screen, enhanced graphics, and new titles including Mario Kart World. Analysts believe the console’s broader fanbase will drive strong early adoption.

Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis noted that Nintendo is better prepared this time to meet demand. The company projected sales of 15 million units in the current fiscal year and received 2.2 million lottery applications via its My Nintendo Store in Japan. U.S. retailer Target sold out of pre-orders in under two hours.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that production capacity would be increased to surpass sales forecasts. The company also expects to sell 4.5 million original Switch units this year. The Switch 2 retails at $499.99.

Despite optimism, some analysts question the sustainability of demand once early adopters purchase the console, citing a limited lineup of first-party launch titles. Ampere projects Switch 2 sales will exceed 100 million units by 2030, following the original Switch’s 152 million units sold.

Nintendo shares have surged nearly 30% this year, trading near record highs.
