Nigeria’s Federal Government Partners with Nine Companies to Expand Gas Infrastructure Under Midstream and Downstream Gas Fund

The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) established by the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), has signed joint venture investment agreements with nine companies to boost the country’s gas infrastructure. The agreements, finalized in Abuja, involve ANT Energy Ltd, Sub Sea Gas, Wishnefisky Global, Waterdance International Concepts, Geospectra Energy, Deemah Integrated Services, Sonic Petroleum, VTT LNG West Africa, and Amari Energy Resources.

MDGIF Executive Director Oluwole Adama revealed the projects encompass ten major initiatives, including six gas processing plants—two utilizing flare gas to reduce environmental pollution—three Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling stations to promote domestic gas use in transport and industry, and one bulk liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facility aimed at easing supply chain bottlenecks.

The recent reforms have attracted investment, boosted local refining capacity, and advanced monetization of Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, praised the deals as a landmark achievement in realizing President Bola Tinubu’s “Decade of Gas” vision, emphasizing the government’s dedication to energy security, economic growth, and sustainability.

Ekpo urged partners to prioritize timely project delivery, professionalism, and accountability, cautioning against complacency. “The future of Nigeria’s gas economy will be judged not by documents signed but by results delivered, jobs created, and energy supplied to millions,” he said.

The initiatives aim to close critical gaps in Nigeria’s gas value chain, enhancing infrastructure to efficiently transport gas from production to end-users across sectors and regions.

In a related development, Ekpo also commissioned “Project CNG-Sprout,” designed to support university transportation with CNG-powered buses, promoting affordable, cleaner energy alternatives to reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint and foster a green economy.
