Nigeria’s Defence Chief Urges Border Fencing to Combat Armed Criminals and Strengthen National Security

General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria, has called for the fencing of Nigeria’s borders with neighboring Francophone countries to control the movement of armed criminals and prevent security threats. Speaking at the 2025 VON Forum inaugural media programme, General Musa warned that Nigeria’s security depends heavily on the stability of the Sahel region, emphasizing that if the Sahel falls, Nigeria could be next.

He highlighted examples of other countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia that fenced their borders to achieve peace and urged Nigeria to consider fencing its extensive borders—1,500 km with Niger Republic and 1,900 km with Cameroon—surrounded by volatile regions. General Musa stressed the importance of national unity, citizen collaboration, and good governance as vital to overcoming Nigeria’s security challenges.

The Defence Chief also urged for an expedited national census to create a comprehensive citizen database, which is critical for security and governance. He underscored the military’s commitment, assuring Nigerians that if the military fails, the nation fails, but Nigeria will not fail. He appealed for public support to combat misinformation, urging citizens to stand united against threats and support military personnel, many of whom have sacrificed immensely.

General Musa warned against celebrating failure and spreading falsehoods that undermine national cohesion. He called for patriotism, unity, and self-determination, stressing that no external force will save Nigeria unless its people come together to protect their nation.
