Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by fellow senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. Addressing the Senate on Wednesday, Akpabio stated he was raised with respect for women and had never harassed anyone.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, in an interview with Arise Television on Friday, claimed that Akpabio made inappropriate advances towards her during a visit to his residence in Akwa Ibom on December 8, 2023. She alleged he led her around his home while making sexual advances, despite her husband being present. She further accused him of suggesting that she should “take care of him” in return for favorable consideration of her motions in the Senate.
Akpabio refuted the claims, stating, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother and have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.”
The allegations have sparked nationwide debate, with many calling for an independent probe. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki described the issue as too serious to be ignored. On Wednesday, opposing groups of protesters gathered in Abuja, with one side demanding Akpabio’s resignation while the other voiced support for him.
During a plenary session, Uduaghan formally submitted a petition urging an investigation. Akpabio allowed the petition to proceed, referring it to the Senate committee on code of conduct, ethics, and public petitions.
Before assuming his role as Senate President, Akpabio served as governor of Akwa Ibom for eight years and as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
