Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed deep concern over the ongoing dispute between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Kogi Central Senatorial District representative, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement via his official X page on Saturday, Saraki urged all parties involved to prioritize protecting the Senate as an institution rather than focusing on individuals. He lamented the situation’s negative impact on the Senate’s integrity, public perception, and credibility.
Saraki called for an open, transparent, and honest investigation by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions to address the allegations raised by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Akpabio. He emphasized that only a fair probe would prevent the Senate from being seen as tolerating misconduct, including sexual harassment, gender bias, and abuse of office.
Recalling his tenure as Senate President, Saraki cited a similar scenario where he voluntarily subjected himself to an open investigation after being accused of importing an official car without paying customs duty. He urged the 10th Senate leadership to follow this precedent of transparency.
Saraki clarified that he was not taking sides in the dispute but stressed the need for a thorough investigation to uphold the Senate’s sanctity. He concluded by urging all lovers of democracy to work towards strengthening the legislative institution.
