Rivers State Government Dismisses Reports of Obasanjo and PANDEF’s Visit to Governor Fubara
The Rivers State Government has strongly denied recent reports suggesting that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and representatives of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) visited Governor Siminalayi Fubara to discuss the state’s ongoing political issues.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the government labeled these reports as false and misleading, emphasizing that no such meeting ever took place. This clarification follows heightened political tensions in the state, particularly the controversy surrounding Governor Fubara’s alleged restriction from accessing the Rivers State House of Assembly complex to present the 2025 budget.
The reported incident has drawn criticism from various stakeholders, with Anabs Sara-Igbe, a former national publicity secretary of PANDEF, condemning the action. He described it as a direct insult to the people of Rivers State, stressing that such occurrences undermine democracy and governance in the region.
In response to the growing tensions, PANDEF has urged key political figures, including Governor Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and former Governor Peter Odili, to engage with the Victor Attah-led peace committee. This committee, established in November 2024, aims to mediate and find resolutions to the escalating political crisis in the Niger Delta.
The Rivers State Government reiterated its commitment to transparency and urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate information regarding state affairs. As political dynamics continue to evolve, stakeholders remain watchful of further developments in Rivers State.
