NSCDC Seizes Container Truck Carrying 70,000 Litres of Stolen Petroleum in Rivers State
Rivers State, Nigeria – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intercepted a container truck loaded with 70,000 litres of stolen petroleum products in Rivers State. The operation, which took place in the early hours of the morning, is part of ongoing efforts to curb oil theft and illegal bunkering in the region.
NSCDC Cracks Down on Illegal Petroleum Activities
According to the NSCDC Rivers State Command, the truck was seized along a major highway following credible intelligence on the activities of petroleum smugglers. The suspected oil thieves were attempting to transport the illegally refined petroleum product to an undisclosed location before security operatives swooped in.
Addressing the media, NSCDC Commandant Basil Igwebueze stated that the truck had been impounded, and investigations were ongoing to apprehend all individuals involved in the illegal operation.
“We remain committed to fighting oil theft and economic sabotage. The NSCDC will not relent in its efforts to protect Nigeria’s oil sector from criminal activities,” Igwebueze affirmed.
Illegal Oil Activities Threaten National Economy
Oil theft and illegal refining have been persistent challenges in Rivers State and the Niger Delta region, leading to significant revenue losses for the country. Security operatives have intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks engaged in the unlawful diversion of petroleum products.
Experts estimate that Nigeria loses billions of naira annually due to oil theft, which also contributes to environmental degradation and pollution in affected communities.
Call for Stronger Measures Against Oil Theft
Stakeholders in the oil and gas sector have called for stricter penalties for those involved in illegal petroleum activities. They emphasize the need for enhanced surveillance, better security coordination, and community engagement to combat oil theft effectively.
Meanwhile, the NSCDC has assured the public that it will continue to work with other security agencies to prevent further incidents and ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law.
Public Encouraged to Report Suspicious Activities
Authorities are urging citizens to report suspicious petroleum-related activities to security agencies to help tackle the menace of oil theft. The government also continues to explore policies aimed at addressing the root causes of illegal refining and pipeline vandalism in Nigeria.
This latest seizure highlights the ongoing battle against oil-related crimes in Rivers State and underscores the need for sustained vigilance and stronger enforcement measures.
