Northern Governors Strongly Condemn Deadly Plateau Attacks, Call for Urgent Security Measures
In the wake of the recent tragic attacks in Plateau State, the Northern Governors Forum has issued a strong condemnation, expressing deep concern over the rising insecurity and violence in the region. The forum, led by its Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, described the attacks as senseless and barbaric, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The attacks, which took place in parts of Bokkos and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State, reportedly claimed numerous lives and displaced hundreds of residents, further deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region. The governors, in a statement released on behalf of the forum, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Plateau State.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya, speaking on behalf of the 19 Northern governors, emphasized that such acts of violence are not only unacceptable but also detrimental to the peace and unity of the region and the nation at large.
> “The Northern Governors Forum is deeply saddened by the latest attacks in Plateau State. We strongly condemn these acts of violence and urge security agencies to act swiftly in apprehending those responsible. Enough is enough — we must restore peace to our communities,” the statement read.
The forum also called for a coordinated and sustainable security response, urging the Federal Government and all relevant stakeholders to invest in long-term strategies that address the root causes of violence, including poverty, unemployment, and ethnic tensions.
In addition to security interventions, the governors stressed the importance of community engagement and intelligence gathering to preempt future attacks. They also appealed for calm and urged communities to resist the temptation to retaliate, instead advocating for lawful means of seeking justice.
Furthermore, the Northern Governors Forum reiterated its commitment to working with security agencies, traditional institutions, and community leaders to foster peace, reconciliation, and development across the region.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State government has confirmed that relief efforts are underway to support displaced persons, while investigations into the attacks continue. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has assured residents that his administration will not relent in its pursuit of peace and justice.
The rising wave of insecurity in Plateau State has reignited national debates about the effectiveness of current security architecture and the need for state policing — a subject many Northern governors are now revisiting in light of recent developments.
As the nation mourns the loss of lives in Plateau, there is renewed urgency for comprehensive reforms that can prevent such tragedies from recurring.
