In a move aimed at modernizing its immigration framework, Nigeria is set to implement an electronic visa (e-visa) system to streamline the visa process for foreign travellers. The announcement came during a joint meeting in Abuja between Interior Minister Tunji Ojo and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
The e-visa system will enable applicants to obtain travel authorisation entirely online, eliminating the need to visit embassies or consulates. The shift is expected to significantly reduce application time, improve security screening through integration with global criminal databases, including Interpol, and open the nation to legitimate visitors without compromising safety.
Ojo confirmed that a centralized visa approval center at the immigration headquarters is already operational, staffed with trained officers and equipped for digital processing. He emphasized that the reform is designed to cut red tape and end the culture of lobbying for visa access to Nigeria.
“Our goal is to make Nigeria more accessible while prioritizing national security,” Ojo said. “This system will allow people to experience the beauty of Nigeria without unnecessary hurdles.”
A joint team from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will be formed to implement the regulatory framework, reinforcing the commitment to protect Nigeria’s interests while promoting international travel and tourism.
