Nigeria Mourns the Passing of Ijaw Leader Edwin Clark at 97

Nigeria is in mourning following the death of prominent Ijaw leader Edwin Clark, who passed away Monday night in Abuja at the age of 97.

Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan joined state governors and leaders across the nation in paying tribute to the elder statesman. Obasanjo, through his media aide Kehinde Akinyemi, described Clark as “a seasoned economist, a tested administrator, an accomplished politician, and a revered community leader.” Jonathan hailed him as “a father figure, peerless icon, and relentless crusader for justice.”

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun called Clark’s death “a glorious conclusion of a monumental chapter in Nigerian history,” while Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described him as “bold, outspoken, and fearless.”

The Northern States Governors’ Forum and various leaders, including Peter Mbah, Douye Diri, Bassey Otu, and Siminalayi Fubara, praised Clark’s lifelong commitment to equity, justice, and national development. Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and NDDC Chairperson Chiedu Ebie highlighted his lasting legacy as a unifying force for the Niger Delta and Nigeria.

Clark’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s growth, his advocacy for restructuring, and his dedication to the Niger Delta region will be remembered as the nation bids farewell to one of its most influential voices.
