Kwara State Government Shuts Down Unregistered IJMB Coaching Centres to Uphold Educational Standards

In a decisive move to uphold educational standards, the Kwara State Government has shut down several unregistered IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) coaching centres operating illegally across the state. This action underscores the government’s commitment to regulating educational institutions and ensuring that students receive quality instruction from accredited establishments.

Government’s Commitment to Education Regulation

The Executive Director of the Agency for Mass Education, Saka Yusuf, emphasized the importance of compliance with state educational regulations. Speaking during a meeting with the Association of Private Coaching Centres of Nigeria, he expressed concern over the proliferation of unauthorized coaching centres, warning that such practices could compromise students’ academic futures.

“Coaching centres must not enroll students from schools and present them as regular attendees. This contravenes the state’s educational policies,” Yusuf stated. He urged proprietors to align with the government’s efforts to enhance the quality of education in Kwara State.

Support for the Crackdown from Stakeholders

In response to the crackdown, the President of the Association of Private Coaching Centres, Olumide Agboola, expressed support for the government’s stance, advocating for strict penalties against any institution found violating the law. Additionally, a coaching centre proprietor, Thomas Adebiyi, reassured that all centres would comply with government directives, ceasing any unethical practices immediately.

Implications for Education in Kwara State

This crackdown serves as a warning to unregistered educational operators, reinforcing the necessity of proper registration and adherence to established guidelines. By taking this action, the Kwara State Government aims to safeguard students from substandard education providers and promote a system where only accredited institutions can operate, ensuring that students receive high-quality instruction.

As the state intensifies efforts to regulate the education sector, parents and students are advised to verify the accreditation status of coaching centres before enrolling. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of improving the standard of education in Nigeria.
