Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced a significant relaxation of the ongoing curfew in three communities — Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun — following promising signs of restored peace in the historically tense regions. This decision comes as part of the state government’s continuous efforts to de-escalate communal tensions and foster long-term harmony.
The warring communities have been under strict curfew for months due to recurring clashes over boundary disputes and land ownership, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property, and heightened insecurity. Governor Adeleke, who has prioritized peacebuilding since assuming office, stated that the curfew adjustment is a result of consistent engagements, improved security presence, and community cooperation.
Effective immediately, the new curfew hours are now 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, reduced from the previous dusk-to-dawn restrictions that began at 6:00 PM. This modification is expected to ease movement for residents, boost evening commerce, and help restore a sense of normalcy, especially for local businesses and transport operators.
Governor Adeleke emphasized that the relaxation does not equate to a complete lift of the curfew and warned that any breach of peace would result in a reinstatement of stricter measures. “We are trusting that the people will continue to uphold peace. This curfew adjustment is a reward for improved behavior and an encouragement to all stakeholders to remain committed to peace,” he said.
Security agencies have been directed to maintain high vigilance across the affected communities to prevent any resurgence of violence. Traditional rulers, youth leaders, and civil society groups have also been called upon to sustain dialogue and discourage provocations.
Community members have responded positively to the development. Market leaders and transport unions in the region welcomed the curfew ease, noting that it would allow for better economic activity and reduce hardship for families who depend on evening trade.
The Osun State government has reaffirmed its commitment to a permanent resolution of the disputes, promising further interventions through peace summits, inter-community dialogue sessions, and enhanced security intelligence operations.
This move is seen as a step forward in stabilizing the region and rebuilding trust among the warring communities. While challenges remain, the government’s proactive stance and the citizens’ cooperation may mark a turning point in the history of these embattled areas.
