EFCC Set to Question Tompolo Over Alleged Naira Abuse
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its intention to question ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over allegations of naira abuse. This move comes amid the EFCC’s intensified nationwide campaign to clamp down on the mishandling of Nigeria’s currency, particularly during public ceremonies and social events.
Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that Tompolo is expected to appear before investigators following the circulation of video clips on social media showing a lavish display of money, allegedly involving him. The footage, which has since gone viral, shows bundles of naira notes being sprayed and tossed during a recent event in Delta State. The EFCC views such acts as a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) regulations regarding the handling of the naira.
According to Section 21 of the CBN Act, it is a punishable offense to abuse the Nigerian currency in any form, including spraying, mutilating, or stepping on the notes. The EFCC, under the leadership of Ola Olukoyede, has in recent months made it clear that public figures, celebrities, and even traditional rulers will not be spared if found guilty of naira abuse.
EFCC officials are also said to be compiling evidence from witnesses and video materials to establish a case against the former warlord. While Tompolo has yet to make any public statement regarding the allegations, insiders suggest that he may soon be formally invited for questioning at the EFCC’s zonal office.
This development marks another high-profile case in the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to enforce financial discipline and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s currency. It also underscores the commission’s resolve to hold influential individuals accountable, regardless of their status or past affiliations.
As the story unfolds, Nigerians are watching closely to see how the case against Tompolo progresses and what implications it may have for similar incidents across the country.
