The Coalition for Democracy and Development (CDD) has issued a strong warning to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging them to set aside their differences and sign a new peace pact within 90 days to resolve the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
The CDD criticized both leaders for prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of the people, describing the escalating crisis as a failure of leadership. The dispute has worsened despite a previous peace agreement signed in December 2023, culminating in President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of Governor Fubara and other elected officials.
In a statement signed by Dr. George Ifure, the CDD warned that Nigerians will hold Wike and Fubara accountable if they fail to sign a new agreement within the stipulated timeframe. The organization also urged President Tinubu and the National Assembly to form a high-level committee of eminent Nigerians to mediate and find a lasting solution.
“We call on Wike and Governor Fubara to prioritize the interests of the people and work towards signing a new peace pact within the next 90 days,” the statement read. “If they fail to do so, Nigerians are prepared to hold them responsible.”
The CDD further emphasized the need for bold and visionary leadership from President Tinubu, urging him to handle the crisis in a way that will restore democratic governance in Rivers State.
As tensions persist, the coalition urged all stakeholders to work towards a peaceful and democratic resolution, stressing that stability in Rivers State is crucial for national unity and governance.
