Bauchi Poly Rector Cautions New Students Against Examination Malpractice, Warns Against ‘Malpractice Insurance’ Trend

In a strong message aimed at safeguarding academic integrity, the Rector of Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP), Bauchi, Dr. Suleiman Lame, has issued a stern warning to newly admitted students against engaging in examination malpractice or subscribing to what he described as “malpractice insurance.”

Dr. Lame delivered the cautionary statement during the institution’s matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session, held at the school’s main auditorium in Bauchi. The event marked the formal induction of thousands of new students into the various departments and faculties of the polytechnic.

The rector emphasized that any student found engaging in dishonest academic practices—including paying for answers during examinations or forming alliances aimed at cheating—will face immediate disciplinary action, which could include expulsion.

He expressed concern over the growing trend among some students who reportedly contribute money in groups to bribe lecturers or hire external agents to assist them in examinations—a practice he labeled “malpractice insurance.” Dr. Lame made it clear that such behaviors undermine the value of education and the credibility of the institution’s certificates.

“We are committed to producing graduates who are not only skilled but also ethically sound,” the rector stated. “I advise all new students to steer clear of any conduct that would bring shame to themselves and disrepute to this great institution. Anyone caught indulging in malpractice, regardless of their status, will face the full weight of our disciplinary code.”

In addition to the warning, the rector encouraged the fresh students to make the most of their academic journey by committing to hard work, discipline, and personal development. He urged them to utilize the available academic and non-academic resources at their disposal to improve themselves and make meaningful contributions to society.

Dr. Lame also took the opportunity to highlight ongoing reforms at the polytechnic aimed at improving academic standards, including the adoption of digital learning tools, infrastructure development, and enhanced staff training programs.

He reaffirmed the polytechnic’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption, cultism, drug abuse, and all forms of anti-social behavior. He advised students to always seek help through appropriate channels if they experience challenges, instead of resorting to illegal or unethical means.

The matriculation ceremony was attended by principal officers of the institution, faculty members, parents, and dignitaries from the Bauchi State Government.
