Niger Declares National Mourning After Deadly Mosque Attack

In a tragic incident, Niger has declared three days of national mourning following a brutal attack on a mosque in the village of Fambita, located in the rural commune of Kokorou near the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. The assault, attributed to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), resulted in the deaths of at least 44 civilians, with 13 others severely injured.

The attack occurred early Friday afternoon during a prayer service at the mosque. Heavily armed terrorists surrounded the mosque and carried out the massacre with unusual cruelty, according to Niger’s Interior Ministry. The assailants also set fire to a local market and homes before retreating.

This incident is part of a series of violent attacks in the region, where jihadi groups allied with al-Qaida and the Islamic State have been active for years. Despite military efforts and the establishment of the Alliance of Sahel States by Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali to enhance security cooperation, the situation has worsened, with a record number of attacks and civilian casualties reported.

The Nigerien government has vowed to hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice, reinforcing its commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
