Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park Zoo has opened a new drop-off facility dedicated to providing temporary care for sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife. The centre offers a crucial first step for animals before they are transferred to the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre located in Ile des Chênes, about 20 kilometres south of Winnipeg.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Assiniboine Park Conservancy and Wildlife Haven, aiming to improve wildlife conservation and access to animal care within the city. The facility, located on the west side of the zoo’s main entrance parking lot at 2595 Roblin Blvd, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Individuals who find injured or orphaned animals are advised to call Wildlife Haven at 204-202-3806 for guidance. Trained staff will assess whether the animal requires intervention and provide instructions on the next steps. In some cases, experts may recommend no human interference to ensure the best outcome for the animal.
Volunteers at the drop-off centre will assist with the intake process, under the supervision of the zoo’s veterinary team, which will conduct health assessments and provide necessary temporary care. Outside operating hours, injured wildlife can be taken to Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital at 100-350 North Town Rd for assistance.
This facility enhances the city’s capacity to care for wildlife, supporting the preservation of local species and their natural habitats.
