Authorities released additional videos Friday related to the investigation into the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The footage includes images of agents revisiting the couple’s Santa Fe home days after their bodies were discovered to search for further evidence.
Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were found dead on February 26 after maintenance and security workers contacted the police. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office has been releasing redacted records under a court order that mandates images of the deceased be obscured, with more releases expected.
The latest batch features hours of police body camera footage, adding to previously released investigative reports, photos, and videos from the initial response. New videos show detectives interviewing workers and combing through the home for evidence, including Arakawa’s laptop. In one clip, detectives are seen at a pharmacy reviewing security footage to find Arakawa’s last public appearances.
In another video, a pest control worker shares that he hadn’t seen Hackman for about a month, noting that the actor appeared frail and was using a cane during their last encounter.
Authorities confirmed that Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare, rodent-borne illness causing severe respiratory symptoms. Hackman is believed to have passed away about a week later from heart disease compounded by Alzheimer’s disease.
One of the couple’s three dogs was found deceased from dehydration and starvation near Arakawa’s body, while two other dogs survived.
