New U.S. Policy: Canadians Staying Over 30 Days Must Register and Provide Biometrics

Starting April 11, 2025, Canadians and other foreign nationals planning to stay in the United States for more than 30 days will be required to register with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and provide biometric data, including fingerprints. This policy change stems from a January 20 executive order by President Donald Trump aimed at enforcing immigration regulations.

Historically, Canadians enjoyed certain exemptions from U.S. travel laws due to close bilateral ties. However, under the new rule, Canadian visitors, including “snowbirds” who spend extended periods in warmer U.S. states during winter, must comply with these registration requirements.

The Canadian Snowbird Association, representing Canadians who spend part of the year in the U.S., expressed concern over the policy shift. They are working with U.S. congressional representatives to amend the registration requirement or seek exemptions for Canadian travelers.

To comply, affected individuals aged 14 and older must create an online account with USCIS and schedule a biometrics appointment. Failure to register or carry proof of registration may result in fines or imprisonment.
