Netflix’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ Leads 2024 Oscars with 13 Nominations, Making History for Trans Representation

As wildfires swept through Los Angeles, the spotlight turned to Hollywood’s awards season, with Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, a groundbreaking Spanish-language narco-musical, dominating the 2024 Oscar nominations. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the French-made film earned 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Oscar.

Another musical, Wicked, adapted from the Broadway hit, followed closely with 10 nominations, including Best Picture and acting nods for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

Demi Moore (The Substance), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).

Original Song nominees include:
“El Mal” (Emilia Pérez), “The Journey” (The Six Triple Eight), “Like a Bird” (Sing Sing), “Mi Camino” (Emilia Pérez), and “Never Too Late” (Elton John: Never Too Late).

The Best Animated Film category features:
Flow, Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, and The Wild Robot.

Best Supporting Actor nominees:
