With the election nearing its end, federal party leaders are making their final pushes for support, and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is once again in Winnipeg to rally his base. Speaking at a rally in downtown Winnipeg, Singh condemned U.S. tariffs, describing them as a “massive threat” to Canadians worried about job loss and rising costs. He reiterated the NDP’s stance as the only party willing to fight for ordinary people, not millionaires or CEOs. “The only ones you can trust to fight back and defend your interests are New Democrats,” Singh declared.
The NDP faces a potential challenge in Manitoba as polls suggest its position is weakening, with the party trailing both the Liberals and Conservatives in the region. However, Singh remains optimistic, noting key achievements such as the dental care program and a pharmacare agreement with the Manitoba government, which will provide coverage for diabetes medication and contraceptives.
The NDP’s two seats in Winnipeg—held by Leah Gazan (Winnipeg Centre) and Leila Dance (Elmwood-Transcona)—are considered strongholds, though Dance’s tenure has been short, having only been elected in a September 2024 byelection. Singh emphasized that these NDP MPs have delivered more than all of the province’s Conservative MPs combined.
The latest Probe Research poll, commissioned by the Winnipeg Free Press, suggests the NDP’s support in Manitoba has rebounded in recent weeks, rising from 9% to 15%. While Liberal Leader Mark Carney is expected to visit Winnipeg again to maintain his party’s lead, the NDP hopes to hold onto its seats in this critical battleground province.
