Mystery Surrounds Death of Indian International Student Found in Toronto Waters

The family of Sahil Kumar, a 22-year-old Indian student recently arrived in Canada, is demanding answers after his body was found in Toronto waters—10 days after he went missing near Yonge and Dundas streets. Kumar had moved to Hamilton in April to begin a web design program at Humber College and was last heard from on May 16, when he called his family from a GO train.

Toronto police confirmed Kumar’s death on May 26 but stated the case “does not appear to be a criminal matter.” No further details have been disclosed. The family, however, says the lack of transparency is deeply troubling, especially since Kumar was reportedly happy and in good spirits prior to his disappearance.

“We kept asking, ‘Why would he go to the beach? What happened?’ But we’ve gotten no clear answers,” said Akshay Yadav, Kumar’s uncle in India. The family says Kumar knew how to swim, further deepening their confusion over the discovery of his body in water.

With little financial means or Canadian contacts, Kumar’s relatives say they feel powerless to press for a deeper investigation. Communication with authorities reportedly stopped after the body was identified via video call.

Kumar’s case is one of several recent mysterious deaths involving Indian international students in Canada. The family has connected with others, including the relatives of Vedatman Poduval, a York University student reported missing and later confirmed dead in June.

“When this happens again and again, it should raise questions,” said Yadav, voicing growing concern in the Indian student community.
