A magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck Washington state on Wednesday afternoon, with seismologists reporting it was “lightly felt” in Victoria, B.C. The quake occurred approximately 58 kilometres southeast of Victoria, across the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Blyn.
Earthquakes Canada confirmed there were no reports of damage and none were expected. The tremor comes as British Columbians remain alert to seismic activity following a 4.7-magnitude earthquake that rattled the Sunshine Coast on February 21 and was widely felt across the Lower Mainland. Another earthquake near the U.S. San Juan Islands also woke some B.C. residents on Monday.
Despite recent quakes, seismologists emphasize there is no cause for alarm, as thousands of earthquakes occur in B.C. annually. However, residents are urged to stay prepared for the anticipated “Big One,” a potentially catastrophic megathrust earthquake, by ensuring they have emergency supplies and evacuation plans in place.
