Microsoft is battling delays in recovering from a major outage affecting its popular tools, Outlook and Teams, despite deploying a fix.
.On Monday, Microsoft announced it had identified the root cause of the outage and began rolling out a solution. By noon ET, outage-tracking site Downdetector reported over 5,000 user complaints. However, this number doesn’t fully reflect the scope of the issue. Microsoft stated that manual restarts were being conducted on machines experiencing “unhealthy states” to restore service.
.At noon, the company reported that the fix had reached 98% of the impacted environments. Yet, reports on Downdetector continued to rise, with Microsoft later acknowledging that progress was slower than anticipated for many users. By 2 PM ET, Microsoft confirmed it was still facing delays and did not provide a definitive timeline for full recovery.
.The outage disrupted workflows for many office workers globally, although some U.S. users on X (formerly Twitter) joked about enjoying a brief pause ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
.While this incident highlights the challenges of large-scale tech outages, it is relatively contained compared to other global disruptions this year. For instance, CrowdStrike’s software malfunction over the summer caused a record-breaking IT crisis, halting air travel, disrupting healthcare services, and incurring $5 billion in losses for major corporations.
