Michigan Synagogue Attack Investigated by FBI as Suspected Targeted Violence Against Jewish Community

Authorities in the United States are investigating a violent incident after a vehicle was deliberately driven into a synagogue near Detroit, Michigan, in what officials say appears to be a targeted act against the Jewish community.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the incident at Temple Israel, describing it as antisemitism and “hate, plain and simple.” The attack occurred on Thursday at the synagogue in West Bloomfield, a suburb of Detroit, where a preschool and community facilities are also located.

The FBI has launched an investigation into the crash, calling it a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, although officials say the suspect’s precise motive remains under investigation.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that no staff members or children at the synagogue or its attached school were physically harmed during the incident. However, a security guard sustained injuries while responding to the situation and is expected to recover.

Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a naturalised United States citizen originally from Lebanon who moved to the country in 2011. Authorities said Ghazali drove a vehicle intentionally into the synagogue building, moving down a hallway before being stopped by armed security guards. The vehicle later caught fire.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said it remains difficult to determine the exact cause of the suspect’s death because of the fire that engulfed the vehicle. In addition to the injured security guard, approximately 30 law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation after responding to the scene.

Rabbi Jen Lader of Temple Israel described the moments following the attack as chaotic and frightening for members of the congregation. Speaking shortly after the incident at a nearby community centre, she said the experience highlighted the ongoing security concerns faced by Jewish communities across the United States.

She noted that synagogues increasingly prepare for potential threats and often rely on trained security teams to protect worshippers and community members.

Governor Whitmer said the attack has left the local Jewish community shaken, particularly because the synagogue houses a preschool where more than 100 young children were present at the time. Children ranging from infants to five years old were quickly evacuated as the situation unfolded.

Temple Israel is one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues in the United States and serves as a central gathering place for the Jewish community in the Detroit metropolitan area.

Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, who grew up near the synagogue, said the incident underscores the broader challenge of combating antisemitism across the country. She stressed that hate directed at Jewish communities must be confronted regardless of where it originates politically.

Slotkin noted that Jewish Americans experience a disproportionate number of hate crimes compared to other communities in the United States. She warned that unless antisemitism is consistently challenged, violent incidents like the one in Michigan may continue to occur.

Federal and local authorities are continuing their investigation into the attack as they work to determine the suspect’s motivations and whether additional security measures are necessary to protect religious institutions.
