Meta’s $65 Billion AI Push: Zuckerberg Eyes Top Spot in AI Race

Meta Platforms, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, plans to invest up to $65 billion in 2025 to expand its AI infrastructure. This ambitious move aims to strengthen Meta’s competitive edge against tech giants OpenAI and Google. The investment includes ramping up AI hiring and constructing a data center exceeding 2 gigawatts—large enough to cover much of Manhattan.

Meta, a major purchaser of Nvidia’s sought-after AI chips, intends to end the year with over 1.3 million graphics processors and will bring 1 GW of computing power online by 2025. Zuckerberg labeled 2025 a “defining year for AI,” emphasizing how these efforts will drive Meta’s core products and business.

This announcement follows major AI investment moves by competitors, including a $500 billion Stargate initiative by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, and Microsoft and Amazon’s plans to significantly boost spending on AI infrastructure in 2025. Meta’s Llama AI models and open-source strategy continue to differentiate it in the competitive landscape.

Zuckerberg expects Meta’s AI assistant to reach over 1 billion users in 2025, up from 600 million monthly users last year. The outlined $65 billion capital expenditure marks a significant jump from last year’s $38-$40 billion, exceeding analyst estimates.
