Meta announced on Friday that it is lifting some restrictions placed on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

The social media giant suspended Trump’s accounts indefinitely after his commendation of protesters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Two years later, the company reinstated his accounts with the resolve to monitor Trump’s posts for further violations that could lead to another suspension of between one month and two years.

Trump, who is the main rival to President Joe Biden in the November election will no longer be subject to the additional monitoring, according to Meta.

“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for president on the same basis,” Meta said in an updated blog post.

The failure of the company to put a check on political content, including from politicians, had attracted criticisms from social media experts.

Trump was also banned from Twitter, now known as X, in 2021 but was restored shortly after Billionaire Elon Musk acquired the company in 2022.
