The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a historic Met Gala on Monday night, highlighting Black fashion and the first menswear-focused theme in over two decades. Celebrities, including Zendaya, Rihanna, and Teyana Taylor, donned creative takes on menswear, with many women wearing tailored suits and pinstripes to honor Black dandyism. The event also marked a pregnancy announcement from Rihanna, who wore a stunning black suit gown showcasing her baby bump.
This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” celebrates Black fashion with a focus on the political and cultural significance of style within the Black community. The event featured a wide range of personalities, with co-chairs including A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Colman Domingo. NBA star LeBron James was absent due to an injury.
The gala raised a record-breaking $31 million for the Met’s Costume Institute, furthering its mission to support fashion exhibitions, including the current one curated by Monica L. Miller. The night was filled with bold fashion choices, from André 3000’s grand piano suit to Janelle Monae’s striking overcoat, all celebrating Black excellence and heritage.
