Matheus Cunha Becomes Amorim’s First Signing as Manchester United Seal £62.5M Transfer

Matheus Cunha will be Ruben Amorim’s first signing of the summer at Manchester United after the Premier League giants swiftly activated the Brazilian’s £62.5 million release clause on the opening day of the transfer window. The 26-year-old leaves Wolves as a club-record sale, signing a five-year deal at Old Trafford with an option for an extra year.

United agreed to a payment structure over two years, despite initially offering five instalments. Wolves are satisfied with the swift completion of the deal, avoiding a prolonged transfer saga and securing the full amount by summer 2027.

Cunha, who will operate as a No. 10 under Amorim, netted 17 goals and recorded six assists last season in all competitions. His signing is still subject to visa and registration approvals. United had monitored him closely since his standout performance at Old Trafford in the opening match of the 2023/24 season.

Despite missing out on Champions League football after their Europa League final loss to Tottenham and finishing a disappointing 15th in the league, Cunha remained committed to joining United, calling them “one of the biggest clubs in the world.” Sources close to the player said he “loves United,” and the club was impressed by his eagerness to join.

Cunha turned down interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Saudi clubs to make the switch. Originally signed by Wolves from Atletico Madrid in 2022 for £34 million, his impact was evident even during his suspension, proving Wolves were not reliant on a single player.

Former United defender Gary Neville praised the signing, saying Cunha fits Amorim’s system perfectly, especially after the departures of Sancho, Rashford, and Antony. Neville highlighted the club’s urgent need for a dynamic playmaker who can travel with the ball, take risks, and deliver in the final third.
