Mass Displacement in Gaza as Israeli Forces Advance in Rafah

Hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans fled on Thursday as Israeli forces advanced into Rafah, marking one of the largest displacements since the war began. Israeli troops pushed deeper into the city, now part of a newly declared “security zone.”

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported at least 97 deaths in the past 24 hours, including 20 casualties in an Israeli airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City. Israel claimed it targeted a militant command center but provided no evidence.

The offensive has intensified fears of permanent displacement, as Israel seizes critical agricultural land and water infrastructure. The blockade on goods entering Gaza has led to skyrocketing prices and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Meanwhile, with no alternative governance in place, Hamas police resumed control during a previous ceasefire, further complicating prospects for peace.

The war, which began after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people, has resulted in over 50,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health officials. As protests against Hamas emerge in northern Gaza, uncertainty grows over the region’s future.
