Markham Launches Canada’s First Mascot-Chatbot Hybrid to Enhance City Services

Markham has become the first municipality in Canada to debut a mascot that doubles as an interactive AI-powered chatbot. Meet Millie the butterfly—already beloved from the Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival—now upgraded to help residents connect with city services 24/7 via markham.ca.

Powered by cutting-edge AI, Millie guides users through natural conversations, providing faster and more accurate assistance. She can even escalate inquiries to live contact center agents when needed. Her vibrant, multi-coloured wings celebrate Markham’s diversity, aiming to build lifelong connections, especially with families and children.

Markham is no stranger to AI innovation, having launched Canada’s first municipal IBM Watson chatbot during COVID-19 and later deploying an AI virtual assistant for the 2022 municipal election. With Millie leading the city’s digital engagement strategy, Mayor Frank Scarpitti says the initiative cements Markham’s reputation as a tech trailblazer.

Residents can expect to see Millie making appearances at events across the city throughout the year.
