Canada’s Marielle Thompson secured her third straight ski cross gold medal on Saturday at the World Cup event in Val di Fassa, Italy. The Whistler, B.C., native edged out France’s Marielle Berger Sabbatel to claim victory, marking her 36th career World Cup win and 73rd podium finish.
Joining Thompson on the podium was Canadian teammate Courtney Hoffos of Windermere, B.C., who earned bronze, while India Sherret of Cranbrook, B.C., finished just off the podium in fourth place.
Thompson, who recently claimed the Crystal Globe as the 2023-24 season champion, dominated the circuit after sweeping the previous weekend’s races in Veysonnaz, Switzerland. “Great racing today. It’s really exciting to have three wins in a row,” said Thompson. “I feel good on my skis and am prepared and confident for tomorrow.”
Hoffos, returning from a major knee injury that sidelined her for the entire 2023-24 season, celebrated her first podium finish since her comeback. “I was super excited to be on the podium, especially after a long season off and doing ACL rehab,” Hoffos said.
On the men’s side, Reece Howden of Cultus Lake, B.C., was the top Canadian finisher, placing seventh, while Switzerland’s Ryan Regez claimed the gold.
The Canadian ski cross team will race again in Val di Fassa on Sunday before heading to Craigleith, Ont., for a home race from March 12-15, followed by the world championships in Engadin, Switzerland, on March 22-23.
