Margaret Atwood Reflects on “The Handmaid’s Tale” Finale Amid Rising Political Parallels and Canadian-U.S. Tensions

Margaret Atwood describes it as “very weird” to see reality reflect the dystopian world of “The Handmaid’s Tale” as the acclaimed series airs its final episode on Crave. Adapted from Atwood’s 1985 novel and filmed mostly in Toronto, the show depicts a totalitarian society stripping women of rights under a theocratic regime.

The series gained renewed relevance during Donald Trump’s presidency, with its imagery influencing protest movements and reflecting contemporary debates on reproductive rights and authoritarianism. Atwood recalls how the political shift in 2016 changed public perception of the story’s themes dramatically.

With Trump’s return to office, Atwood finds the timing of the finale “very weird” but looks forward to the upcoming Hulu sequel “The Testaments,” which explores growing resistance. She also comments on rising tensions between Canada and the U.S., warning this may be the most direct threat since the War of 1812 while noting Canada’s renewed patriotism.

Atwood urges caution against cultural protectionism, emphasizing artistic freedom over mandated expression, and remains cautiously optimistic that society can avoid slipping into dystopian realities. “I don’t see people running around in red outfits with bonnets yet, so we still have hope,” she concludes.
