Manitoba Sees High Demand for New Plastic Health Cards

Manitobans are embracing the transition from paper to plastic health cards, with over 200,000 residents applying for the province’s newly designed, colorful plastic version featuring an image of the northern lights. The initiative, aimed at replacing easily damaged paper cards, began accepting applications on January 15.

The plastic cards, produced in Canada by a Canadian company, can be requested online, by mail, or in person for those without internet access. Approved applications will see cards arriving in mailboxes in the coming days, according to a provincial spokesperson. Additionally, a digital health card is set to launch later this year.

The Manitoba government opted for an application-based system rather than automatically mailing new cards to ensure updated addresses. While Manitobans are not required to switch immediately, replacements for lost or expired cards will be issued in the plastic format. First-time applicants will automatically receive the new card.

Manitoba and Alberta remain the last two provinces still using paper health cards.
