Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has launched a probe after a man was fatally shot by Winnipeg police in a residential neighbourhood on Friday evening. The incident unfolded in the 200-block of Ferry Road after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a suspicious man “covered in blood” and allegedly attempting to break into homes.
Officers located the man behind a residence at approximately 6:16 p.m., where he was found armed with a screwdriver. According to Winnipeg police Chief Gene Bowers, a “use of force encounter” occurred, leading officers to open fire.
Despite administering medical aid on site, the man later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Bowers addressed the media during a rare Saturday news conference, stating, “This is a loss of life, this is a serious incident. It’s serious for the person and family involved and also for our members as well.”
The man, described as behaving erratically, has not yet been publicly identified. The IIU is handling the investigation and is in the process of notifying the man’s family. Chief Bowers confirmed the officers involved will be off duty under critical incident protocol.
