A 36-year-old man from Brandon, Manitoba, has been sentenced to nine months in custody for distributing sexually explicit videos of his then-pregnant ex-girlfriend without her consent. The man uploaded the videos to a popular adult website, some of which included the victim’s face, her pregnant belly, and a version of her name in the titles.
Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta emphasized the “immeasurable harm and irreparable damage” caused by the man’s actions, noting the victim’s profound devastation. The man texted a link to one of the videos to the victim just days after her birthday. The videos had been viewed over 1,700 times before police intervention.
The court highlighted the aggravating factors in this case, including the man’s disregard for the victim’s privacy, his failure to express genuine remorse, and the unknown extent of the videos’ potential redistribution. Despite being an educated business owner with no prior criminal record, the man received a custodial sentence, two years of probation, and was ordered to pay a $202 victim surcharge.
