Manitoba Man Killed in Assault, Three Suspects Charged

Leslie Mason, 45, has died following a deadly assault on the Berens River First Nation in Manitoba, RCMP confirmed in a news release Saturday.

Police were alerted to the assault Thursday around 4 p.m. Mason, a father of 14, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Berens River nursing station, where he succumbed to his wounds.

Mason’s family remembers him as a loving father and jokester who cherished his friends and family. A frequent traveler between Winnipeg and Berens River, Mason had been preparing to move into a new home he was renovating.

Investigations revealed that three men fled the scene in a black Dodge Ram pickup, believed to be heading toward Bloodvein First Nation. The suspects were apprehended near Bloodvein without incident.

Michael Oliver Franklin, 31, and Thomas Bryton Goosehead, 22, face charges of second-degree murder, while Russell Lee Franklin, 43, has been charged with accessory to murder after the fact.

Berens River RCMP, along with major crimes and forensic units, continue to investigate the case.
