A Manitoba judge has issued a permanent injunction barring offshore gambling operators behind bodog.eu and bodog.net from offering services or advertising in the province. The ruling by Court of King’s Bench Judge Jeffrey Harris mandates that Antigua and Barbuda-based companies Il Nido Ltd. and Sanctum IP Holdings Ltd. must use geo-blocking technology to prevent access to their gambling platforms from Manitoba.
The companies are also prohibited from any form of advertising—paid or unpaid—targeted at Manitobans. The court ruled that the companies’ promotion of Bodog as a “legitimate, lawful, ‘safe,’ or ‘trusted’” online gambling site is misleading to the public.
The injunction came after Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries filed the request on behalf of the Canadian Lottery Coalition, which includes provincial gaming bodies from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, and Manitoba. The coalition highlighted concerns that illegal offshore gambling sites divert revenue from lawful provincial operations, harming public funds.
The court order covers advertisements across TV, streaming platforms, social media, sporting events, and other venues. Bodog had marketed its services to Canadians outside Quebec and Nova Scotia, including Manitoba, using its free-play site to promote its real-money gambling offerings.
