Manitoba Becomes First Province to Sign Federal Pharmacare Deal, Expanding Free Prescription Coverage
Winnipeg, Manitoba – In a groundbreaking move, Manitoba has become the first Canadian province to sign a pharmacare agreement with the federal government, securing $219 million over four years to enhance medication accessibility. The deal, announced by Health Minister Mark Holland, will provide free or low-cost contraceptives, diabetes medications, and hormone replacement therapy to residents.
This agreement marks a significant step in Canada’s push for universal pharmacare, fulfilling part of the Liberals’ deal with the NDP to sustain the minority government. Coverage will begin in June, with further studies planned to expand the program nationwide.
