A man has been taken into custody after three men were injured in a suspected knife attack in Stoneybatter, north Dublin.
Irish police responded to a “serious incident” on Sunday afternoon, described by Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan as a “random attack.” Two victims sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while a third suffered a minor injury. The injured men, aged from their mid-20s to mid-40s, were taken to hospital for treatment. According to RTÉ News, they sustained “slashing-type injuries.”
Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed his concern, wishing the victims a “full recovery” and urging anyone with information to contact Gardaí. In a statement on X, he praised the swift response of the Gardaí and emergency services. Sinn Féin president and local TD Mary Lou McDonald also extended her thoughts to the victims and their families, commending the first responders.
The suspect, a man in his late 20s, was initially detained near the scene by an unarmed uniformed officer. A significant police presence was observed in the area as emergency teams attended to the victims. The attack reportedly spanned several streets in the Arbour Hill area of Stoneybatter.
Local Fine Gael councillor Ray McAdam stated that residents were advised to lock their doors during the incident. He acknowledged the shock and concern within the community but emphasized hope for the victims’ swift recovery. He also noted that the rapid police response had reassured residents.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, with multiple scenes still under examination. Gardaí confirmed there is no ongoing risk to the public and have appealed for witnesses, particularly those in the area between 14:30 and 15:30 local time with relevant video footage, to come forward.
