Lost Songs Resurface: Halifax Woman’s 1980s Music Gains New Life and k.d. lang’s Interest

Megan Banning of Halifax never imagined her music from the 1980s would be rediscovered—until her son, Keenan Tamblyn, shared her story with an American podcast. Tamblyn, based in Toronto, submitted the story to “Hyperfixed” on a whim and was surprised by an immediate response. Within weeks, the podcast had uncovered Banning’s old recordings.

In her early 20s, Banning worked as a server at Toronto’s Second City comedy club while dedicating time to songwriting. A connection through the club’s musical director presented a chance for her work to reach k.d. lang, but nothing came of it. Disheartened, she shelved her music, sold her piano, and shifted careers to the film industry.

Tamblyn, who had never heard his mother’s recordings, was determined to bring them to light. He had less than a week to find the tapes before a live podcast taping in New York. With the help of Halifax musician Rich Aucoin, some of Banning’s songs were digitized and performed at the event.

Hearing her own music again left Banning reflective, wishing she hadn’t given up. Tamblyn, deeply moved, reached out to k.d. lang, who expressed interest in listening to the rediscovered songs. Now, Banning is feeling inspired to return to music, embracing the joy of songwriting once again.
