A serious incident unfolded on Monday evening near the Liver Building in Liverpool city centre during Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League title parade, as a car collided with pedestrians on Water Street. Emergency services responded swiftly after reports came in just after 6pm.
Twenty-seven people were taken to hospital by ambulance, including four children, with two sustaining serious injuries—one of whom is a child. Twenty more individuals were treated at the scene but did not require hospital care. Firefighters rescued four people trapped under the vehicle, including a child. A cyclist paramedic hit by the car was uninjured.
A 53-year-old man from Liverpool was detained and arrested at the scene; police believe he was the driver. Authorities have confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism and is considered isolated, with no one else sought in connection.
Liverpool FC and other Premier League clubs expressed sympathy and support for those affected. The city’s mayor and UK leaders also condemned the incident, praising emergency responders’ efforts.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the vehicle struck crowds celebrating Liverpool’s title, with some attempting to stop the driver. Police urged the public not to share distressing footage online but to send any information directly to authorities.
The parade had attracted an estimated one million people, making it one of the largest public celebrations in the city’s history. Investigations are ongoing.
