As a possible U.S. ban on TikTok looms, content creators are turning to its sister app, Lemon8, as an alternative platform. Combining TikTok’s engaging short-form videos with the polished aesthetic of Instagram and Pinterest, Lemon8 is gaining attention amid uncertainty over TikTok’s future.
Owned by China-based ByteDance, Lemon8 first launched in Asian markets before debuting in the U.S. in 2023. While it hasn’t reached TikTok’s massive popularity—with over 170 million U.S. users—recent events have propelled Lemon8 to the spotlight. The app recently ranked among the top free apps on Apple’s App Store following a surge in downloads, driven by creators and a corporate push for user growth.
ByteDance’s challenges are far from over, however. A federal law passed last year requires TikTok to sever ties with ByteDance or face a U.S. ban. The law’s scope extends to other ByteDance-owned apps, including Lemon8 and CapCut, putting their U.S. operations at risk. TikTok has stated it will shut down in the U.S. by January 19 if the government wins its case, currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court.
Influencers, some partnered with Lemon8, have been promoting the platform as a potential refuge for creators in the event of a TikTok ban. ByteDance has facilitated user migration by allowing creators to link their TikTok and Lemon8 accounts, streamlining content sharing across platforms. Despite these efforts, analysts note that many creators may not realize the broader implications for Lemon8 and other ByteDance apps under the new legislation.
Although Lemon8 has seen a 150% increase in global downloads in December, according to Sensor Tower, its daily active users remain just over 1 million—dwarfed by TikTok’s reach. With its future in the U.S. uncertain, ByteDance appears to be strategically positioning Lemon8 to survive regulatory scrutiny, though experts caution it may not escape lawmakers’ attention.
As the Supreme Court hears arguments on the TikTok ban this week, Lemon8’s rise highlights the challenges and complexities of navigating an increasingly scrutinized digital landscape.
