Lebanon Building Hit by Israeli Strike Leaves 30 Dead Amid Intensifying Regional Conflict
Lebanese rescuers recovered 30 bodies from the rubble of a residential building in Barja, central Lebanon, following a devastating Israeli airstrike late Tuesday night. The Civil Defense service confirmed the fatalities on Wednesday as rescue operations continued, although it remains unclear if there are still survivors or bodies trapped under the debris. No statement was made by the Israeli military regarding the intended target of the strike, and there was no prior warning.
The town of Barja, located north of Sidon, had not been a frequent target in the ongoing hostilities between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group, which have intensified over the past year. Moussa Zahran, a resident of the building, recounted the terrifying moment of impact: “Something pulled me hard, and then the explosion happened.” Despite his limited visibility amid the chaos, Zahran managed to locate his wife and son, who both survived but sustained injuries and are now hospitalized.
Another resident, Muhyiddin Al-Qalaaji, received the grim news from his wife while at work. Al-Qalaaji returned to find many of his neighbors dead or injured, carrying out what he could salvage of his family’s belongings. Civil Defense official Mostafa Danaj reported that some residents are still missing, heightening concerns as search efforts continue.
Hezbollah-Israel Tensions Escalate
The Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, which escalated after the October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, has reached new heights since September 2024, with Israeli forces launching intensified aerial bombardments and ground incursions. Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group, began launching rockets across the border following the Gaza conflict last year. In response, Israel has increased its military presence along the northern border, leading to repeated clashes.
In a significant escalation, Hezbollah launched 10 rockets into Israel on Wednesday, setting off alarms across northern and central Israel, including the Tel Aviv area. Although Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue services confirmed no injuries, a rocket caused considerable damage in Raanana, a central Israeli city, after it struck a parked car. Additional rockets landed near Israel’s main airport, though flight operations remained unaffected.
Protests and Political Shifts in Israel
The conflict’s toll has intensified political strain within Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu surprised the nation by dismissing Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday night, leading to widespread protests across Israel, with police detaining 40 demonstrators in Tel Aviv. Netanyahu appointed Foreign Minister Israel Katz, a long-time ally, as Gallant’s successor.
Gallant had advocated for a potential diplomatic solution to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, proposing that military pressure could pave the way for negotiations. Netanyahu, however, maintains a firm stance on continuing military operations against Hamas.
The Israel-Hamas war was sparked on October 7, 2023, when Palestinian militants launched an unprecedented incursion into Israel, killing over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 250 others who were taken into Gaza. As the region grapples with escalating violence, the toll on civilians continues to rise with no clear path to resolution in sight.
